Bioblitz Pictures & Thoughts

I hope that these pictures can begin to convey the fun that 25 volunteers had on April 23rd on Kelleys Island. Through the bioblitz, we identified 7 orders of macroinvertebrates totaling 102 individuals. The quagga mussels were present in great numbers as they were in each of the mud samples and made sampling a little difficult! Dr. Krieger informed us that the robust population of this invasive species has created an ideal environment scuds, which we tallied 43 of in just three hours. We also identified the five unique phytoplanktons. Along with the mud sampling, this was accomplished with the help of our boat captain, Jeff (who also happens to be my awesome husband), Dr. Krieger, Grace, and Jordan. Back in the Kelleys Island Brewery, microscopes were set up for everyone to take a look at the organisms. Bobbie Jo, Celia, and Brandy headed up the tallying and identification of species.

This event was a huge success, in my humble opinion. My mission was to engage the participants in their Great Lake and this happened, in spades. It was a complete joy for me to see everyone identify, collect, and enjoy spending a day in our environment!

Thanks again to all who participated!
